Teleconferencing made kind of easy.

I just discovered OpenMCU-ru.  Its an open video conferencing bridge does SIP and H323 and the best part is, it can host Polycom HDX boxes and Polycom software (for your phone).

You’ll need a dedicated system or VM.  Either way, a single core and a 1GB of ram seems to be fine.  I used an old D945 board with an E2180 CPU and 1 GB of ram.  It could be better but it works for now.

Here’s what I did to get it going:

  • Install Kali Linux 2 from DVD.
  • Configure ssh to start at boot (don’t forget to generate new keys).
  • Went to http://openmcu.ru/public/OpenMCU-ru/3.48/Debian/6/ and downloaded the i386 version
  • dpkg –install openmcu-ru_3.48.0~squeeze_i386.deb
  • and then I let the system tell me which dependencies I needed.  I think there’s only one I can’t remember what it was, because I didn’t write it down.  Bad on me 🙁

So, install done?

Great!

Grab the admin guide from the OpenMCU website’s forum: http://openmcu.ru/forum/index.php?topic=1059.0

To manage your MCU open a browser and hit 127.0.0.1:1420

I am using v. 3.48.  Other than changing the admin password, the only major configuration that needs to be done is to go to Settings->Video and enter at 30 on the “Video frame rate” option line.

The annoying thing about OpenMCU is trying to keep it secure.  I was up for two hours when I noticed many many SIP connections.
